How Much Fall Is 2 Percent Slope Over a Pipe Run?

Use 2% of the horizontal run to calculate total pipe fall, then keep the original slope notation with the job measurements.

A 2 percent slope produces a fall equal to 2 percent of the horizontal run. Multiply the run by 0.02 using the same unit for both measurements. For example, a 15-meter run falls 0.30 meter, or 300 millimeters: 15 × 0.02 = 0.30.

Pipe-fall formula

Fall = horizontal run × (percent slope ÷ 100)

At 2%: Fall = horizontal run × 0.02

The result has the same unit as the horizontal run. A 2% value describes a ratio, not a direction or a universally required pipe slope.

What 2 percent slope means

Percent slope compares vertical change with horizontal distance. A 2% slope means 2 units of vertical change for every 100 equal units of horizontal run. It can be written as the ratio 2 ÷ 100, or 0.02.

100 mm of horizontal run → 2 mm of fall

1 m of horizontal run → 20 mm of fall

1 ft of horizontal run → 0.02 ft of fall, or 0.24 in

Use horizontal distance—not the slightly longer diagonal distance along the pipe. Record the intended high and low endpoints separately, because the percentage alone does not identify which direction the pipe falls.

Worked example: 15 meters at 2%

  1. Horizontal run: 15 m.
  2. Slope: 2%, so 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02.
  3. Substitution: 15 m × 0.02.
  4. Result: 0.30 m of fall.

Convert 0.30 meter to millimeters: 0.30 × 1,000 = 300 mm. So a 15-meter horizontal run at 2% has 300 millimeters of total fall.

Imperial example: 30 feet at 2%

  1. Horizontal run: 30 ft.
  2. Slope: 2%, or 0.02.
  3. Substitution: 30 ft × 0.02 = 0.6 ft.
  4. Convert to inches: 0.6 ft × 12 in/ft = 7.2 in.

Therefore, a 30-foot horizontal run at 2% has 7.2 inches of total fall. Keep the unrounded value unless the measurement method or project documentation calls for a specific rounding practice.

2% compared with mm/m and inches per foot

A 2% slope is exactly 20 mm/m: one meter is 1,000 mm, and 2% of 1,000 mm is 20 mm. In inches per foot, 2% is 0.24 in/ft because 2% of 12 inches is 0.24 inch.

2% = 20 mm/m exactly

2% = 0.24 in/ft exactly

2% is about 1.15 degrees

Do not substitute 1/4 in/ft for 2% without checking the source requirement. One-quarter inch per foot is about 2.083%, so it produces a slightly larger fall over the same run.

Common 2% slope mistakes

  • Using 2 instead of 0.02. Divide the percentage by 100 before multiplying by the run.
  • Mixing units in the formula. Calculate in one unit first, then convert the final fall if needed.
  • Calling 2% the same as 2 degrees. Percent slope and angle are different measurements.
  • Measuring along the pipe. The run in the percentage formula is horizontal.
  • Assuming 2% always applies. Requirements can vary by system, pipe size, jurisdiction, approved plans, and site conditions.
